Find calm and well-being in a cup of Kukicha Yasue – a tea that brings harmony and a sense of connection with nature. This delicious kukicha comes from the beautiful Higashi-Shirakawa area in Gifu Prefecture, where Mr Yasue Hirotake lovingly tends his tea gardens. The leaves and stems come from the Okumidori and Yabukita cultivars and from local tea plants grown from seed (zairaishu).
The taste is harmonious and full, with sweet notes and a light hint of nuts that comes through especially at higher brewing temperatures. Thanks to its naturally low caffeine content, you can enjoy it at any time of day – ideally on a quiet afternoon.
Mr Yasue’s gardens, surrounded by forests and the winding White River, are among the most beautiful in the region, and the unusual way he prunes his tea bushes shows his sensitive approach to the local climate, which is unusually harsh for Japan.
Like his father before him, Mr Yasue farms in harmony with the surrounding nature, without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. He grows, picks and processes the tea himself – first into aracha and then through the final refining (shiage) – in the smallest tea factory I have ever seen. He is the local Shinto priest, a beekeeper, a tea farmer and a tea maker all in one person.
