History

Tea cultivation in Nepal dates back to the 19th century, when the first seedlings were brought from Darjeeling. In 1863, the first plantation, Ilam Tea Estate, was established; others followed, particularly in the east and centre of the country. Under British rule, tea became an important export commodity. Today, Nepalese teas are not only catching up with Darjeeling in quality – in many respects they surpass it.

Garden

Jun Chiyabari

Hile, Dhankuta · 96 ha · 5 locations · 1,700–2,100 m a.s.l.

From the very beginning this has been a thoroughly considered organic project – from selecting soils at carefully identified locations and choosing cultivars, to building a dedicated factory and assembling a team of experienced specialists.

The garden's philosophy rests on respect for tea, people, and nature. The aim is to produce the finest possible teas while maintaining organic practices – with generous inspiration from Masanobu Fukuoka.

Jun Chiyabari in Nepali means "moonlit tea garden". Jun (純) in Japanese means "pure".
