Shiga

Shiga Prefecture, once known as Omi, is recognized as the birthplace of Japanese tea. In 805, the monk Saicho, a pivotal figure in Japanese Buddhism, introduced and planted tea seeds at the base of Mount Hiei's temple. This act marked the beginning of tea cultivation and consumption in Japan, with the tradition spreading throughout the country from this still-existing plantation.
