This tea comes from an exceptional spring 2025 harvest. The unusually cold but sunny spring posed a serious challenge for many farmers, as a considerable part of the harvest succumbed to frost damage. But for Master Sakamoto, it was a blessing. An opportunity he had been waiting for his entire life. Due to this weather, the tea leaves grew slowly and steadily, reaching their peak quality. This year, nature allowed him to fully apply his skills and create teas of extraordinary quality—so far, the finest of his life.
Gyokuro Tenmei “Mandate of Heaven” is a new creation by Master Sakamoto, made for the first time this year. It is the first tea to surpass even the previously highest grade: Gyokuro Tezumi Zen.
The name TENMEI 天命 refers to a lifelong mission bestowed by Heaven, the same “Mandate of Heaven” from which Chinese emperors once derived their right to rule. At the same time, TENMEI 天茗 means “Heavenly Tea” a plant sent from the Heavens to aid humankind in their earthly path.
With the traditional four-week shading, Tenmei possesses an incredibly strong umami that unfolds into a complex, rounded flavor. Its aroma is intense and intoxicating—like an approaching typhoon.
This gyokuro is made specifically for aging, and when stored properly, its quality will only improve over time.
